This is the job description my daughter, Mackenzie and I put together one Saturday morning. We were in the learning phases of what a Deutsch Drahthaar was, could do. We received many responses, complimenting us on our write up for a new hunting applicant.
     Dear potential applicant,
We are the Jennings Family of Wooster, Ohio. Mackenzie (9), Chase (5), Steve & Wendy (3. We are inquiring upon your availability to fill an open position as our next family pet and hunting companion / applicant. We are avid duck, geese, pheasant, and dove hunters (occasionally a rabbit) during the months of Sept-Feb, living in the Amish area of mid eastern Ohio. Our future family companion must be of mild temper, be willing to hunt often among water, fields and heavy brush, have a strong willingness to learn/listen and have a multitude of loving character, as well as willingness to play.
Our last companion was a hard working / eager to please, loving, chocolate Lab named Cinnamon who found herself hunting (Sept-Feb) more often in her later years, and catching friz-bee in the back yard, swimming in ponds / pool, and training by retrieving duck dummies in-between (April-Aug).
Our "Master" hunter / trainer's name is Steve, and is, as well as we're all, deeply saddened to the recent passing of Cinnamon (11yrs). We require an applicant that can move us to the next level of hunting and training, and we are in efforts of selecting our next companion by better getting to know the kennels that will supply us, since we have become very selective to fill this position. We live within walking distance to private ponds as well as to a very large area of some of our state's public wildlife wetlands (Killbuck Wildlife Area). Our hunting will be 50% ducks and geese, 25% pheasants & grouse / other small game, and 25% doves. We hope that this is a job/task up to our next hunting partner's capabilities.

We are not discriminatory, but prefer females, even with the bi-yearly condition, but males trend to make a constant mess around the house. Something our boss will not except. The ability to learn tricks and skills such as Frisbee catching, in our 1 acre grassy yard, will ensure your always being active. Our limiting time frame to fill this position is 1 year, for we are at this time learning more about this breed, Deutsch Drahthaar wanting to know about kennels that produce such selective individuals. We have decided upon moving from the lab to a more versatile breed, one of more stamina. Applicants must be of excellent health and stamina, have extreme potential for retrieving, pointing, picking up bird scent, a strong love/desire for water, learning/listening, strong intelligence, curiosity and an ability to find lost birds.
You will be sharing our dwelling and will be required to follow all internal rules. Bathing upon return from hunts and training is required by our boss. Sleeping quarters will be provided, it will have a closing door with a latch. Color is preferred to be liver and ticked liver with gray/black intermingled into a medium coat. Distinct facial features and body colorings are a plus, as well as a good representation of build.
We like our hunting trips and all parties involved to be unique, well represented, and return for more adventure and fun. Our boss is the one with the visual requirements, and will not put up with any constant / required grooming (any requirements for grooming will be handled within Mackenzie & Chase's department). Please present photo if available. Applicant must also be below 65 lbs and be able to swim for they will be required to hunt from sitting/stay position on bank of river, dike of marsh, and from bottom of canoe (sit/stay position will be required / taught to full extent of the law). "no rocking the boat". Applicant must also be flexible with younger hunter's abilities for we are / will be in training as well. Occasional traveling by car is required to grouse hunting areas (3hrs), we will be walking under darkness to the duck & geese areas, and will have a short trip (10min) to the dove fields. Applicant must remain calm while in vehicle. (open window will be available)
Training will also be provided if required. Treats are an added bonus, for good behavior! Trainer has added requirement of jogging 1.5 - 2 miles every other day to stay in condition during non-hunting / training season. He needs it more than you...should you meet these qualifications.
